Meditation
Meditation allows us to connect to our divine creative spirit. We usually think of ourselves as mostly physical beings and when we die, we will be spiritual beings. But I think that the bigger part of us is spirit even now. We are spiritual beings having a physical experience here on earth.
Our spirit is a part of and connected to God or the Universal Intelligence. It has access to all of the peace and joy and abundance that we could ever want. Most of us don’t know this though so we go around looking for it in material things, careers, achievements, relationships, alchohol, shopping, food or some combination of those. Not that there’s anything wrong with any of those things, but the happiness that we get through them is temporary and it eventually leaves us with an empty and disappointed feeling.
Ekhart Tolle in The Power of the Now gives a great analogy. He likens us to a begger who goes to town every day carrying a box to sit on to beg for a few pennies. One day when he is very old, a stranger asks him what is in the box and he answers “nothing”. The stranger asks him if he’s ever looked inside and he answers “No, but I know it is empty.” The stranger convinces him to open the box. He looks inside and there is a fortune in treasure that he has been carrying around for his whole life.
